Sugar Rush: From Home Kitchen to Professional Bakery

When passion outgrows your kitchen, WorkBay provides the space to scale.

Mireya Barroso never imagined she’d dedicate her life to the art of pastry and baking. But as orders for her desserts, breads, and custom cakes continued to grow, her home kitchen couldn’t keep up. That’s when she discovered WorkBay—and transformed her growing side business into Sugar Rush, a professional bakery with room for both production and customers.

Outgrowing the Home Kitchen

Like many food entrepreneurs, Mireya started small. Her home kitchen was perfect for testing recipes and taking early orders. But as demand increased, the limitations became clear.

I started working from home, and once I realized that the space was too small, we decided to look for another location to continue growing the business,” Mireya explains.

Finding commercial space that met her needs—and her budget—proved challenging. She needed room for production, but also wanted a customer-facing area where people could see and purchase her creations. Traditional commercial real estate felt overwhelming and expensive.

Finding the Right Space

When Mireya first toured a WorkBay unit, she wasn’t sure it was the right fit. But as she began planning the layout and envisioning the possibilities, everything changed.

At first, I wasn’t sure if this was the ideal space, but as we’ve made progress with the construction and decoration, I’ve come to realize that it was a great decision.

What made WorkBay work for Sugar Rush? Flexibility and infrastructure.

Designing a Dual-Purpose Space

Today, Sugar Rush operates in a thoughtfully divided workspace that serves both production and retail needs.

We currently have the space divided into two sections: a production area and a customer-facing section,” Mireya shares. “In the front, customers can come in and see the variety of desserts and breads available at the moment, while in the production area, we prepare all the products that we offer to our customers.

This layout gives Mireya the best of both worlds: efficient production space in the back and a welcoming storefront where customers can browse, order, and soon, even take baking workshops.

Infrastructure That Supports Food Businesses

One of the biggest challenges for food entrepreneurs is finding space with the right utilities and hookups. Sugar Rush needed water, gas, electrical outlets, and proper ventilation—essentials that many warehouse spaces don’t offer without expensive build-outs.

WorkBay’s units came equipped with what Mireya needed from day one.

Every WorkBay unit comes with everything your business could ever need—water hookups, electrical outlets, gas, and other services—allowing your business idea to grow to its fullest potential.

This meant Mireya could focus on building her business rather than coordinating contractors, permits, and utility installations.

Creating a Welcoming Environment

For Mireya, Sugar Rush isn’t just about production—it’s about experience. She designed her space to be warm and inviting, a place where customers feel welcome.

Our space is designed to offer our customers a warm and welcoming environment where they can enjoy different desserts, breads, and hot beverages.

Soon, she’ll be expanding her offerings to include in-person baking workshops, giving customers the chance to learn her techniques and connect with the craft she loves. These workshops will also be available online through the Sugar Rush website.

Advice for Growing Food Businesses

Mireya’s journey from home kitchen to professional bakery shows what’s possible when you have the right space and support. Her advice for other food entrepreneurs considering the leap?

Don’t wait until you’re drowning in orders to look for space. Recognize when your current setup is holding you back, and take action. Finding flexible space that can grow with your business—without locking you into massive overhead—makes scaling manageable rather than overwhelming.

The Bottom Line

I never imagined I’d be able to dedicate myself to the art of pastry and baking—but here we are,” Mireya reflects.

Sugar Rush proves that with the right space, food entrepreneurs can transform their passion into thriving businesses. WorkBay’s flexible warehouse units give bakers, caterers, food producers, and culinary creatives the infrastructure, layout flexibility, and professional environment they need to scale confidently.
